Experimental Studies on Altzheimer´s Cell Changes after End-to-Side Portacaval Shunt

Abstract
|
|
|
As a research for portal decompression, after end-to-side portacaval shunt in six experimental dogs, the author observed hematologic value, liver function test, the changes of nitrogenous compound of blood, the changes of portal and inferior vena caval pressure, weight changes of the dogs, and hstopathological findings of anastomotic stoma, liver, spleen, and brain, before and after the shunt operation.
The significant changes are as follows:
1. In hematologic findings, the postoperative mean of R. B. C. and hematocrit and the platelets count were slightly increased and mean value of W. B. C. was decreased progressively.
2. In liver function test, the decrements of serum albumin, and the increments of serum globulin caused reverse of A/G ratio and the hepatic functions in serum cholesterol, serum bilirubin, serum transaminase, T. T. T. , and prothrombin time were impaired for 2 to 3weeks and recovered progressively. Prothrombin time was slightly increased.
3. B. U. N. and N. P. N. were decreased after shunt operation and blood ammonia was increased
after its irregular fluctuation.
4. The mean of postoperative portal and inferior venacaval pressure was decreased by 32.8% and 5.9%. respectively.
5. Weights of the dogs were progressively decreased.
6. Histopatholocal findings after shunting operation revealed a significant increment of Altzheimer´s cell in the brain tissue at autopsy. Histopathological changes of liver consisted of mainly the degeneration of hepatic cells, disarray of hepatic cell cords, hemorrhage, and periportal infiltration. In spleen, only in one among six cases there revealed sinusoidal hemorrhage, white pulp atrophy, and hemosiderin pigmentation.
7. At autopsy, the patency of anastomosing site was 55.8%, and five among six cases revealed fibrosis in the anastomosing site and three cases revealed foreign body granuloma.
